2023 Year in Review

MacPhail Annual Report

You are bringing the joy of music to all.

Dear MacPhail Community,

We are pleased to present our annual report for fiscal year 2023, which concluded last August. It was a remarkable year for MacPhail. We served 15,000 students of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities through a beautiful amalgam of programs and partnerships, all delivered by the heart and soul of MacPhail, our 210 devoted teaching artists. For the 10th straight year, we received a 97% student satisfaction rating. We continued several years of growth in our community relationships, serving 7,560 students through 116 partnerships at childcare centers, schools, retirement communities, and healthcare facilities across the Twin Cities and the state.

Wrapping up our highly successful Up Tempo! campaign was a significant milestone in 2023. We used our strategic plan to define our fundraising priorities and launch the campaign in 2022. While we started with a goal to raise $25 million in three years, the campaign was concluded in less than two years, with $28.5 million committed at completion. This was a heartwarming and tremendous embrace by the entire state to support our campaign pillars: exceptional faculty, relevant new programming, and much broader access to music education. Access was the highest priority of our campaign efforts, with the aspiration of no student being turned away due to their financial circumstances. The endowed portion of the campaign will allow us to double our financial aid and support across the community.

Your generosity supports exceptional faculty, relevant new programming, and much broader access to music education.

Our innovative early childhood program, Learning with Music, was recognized by a bill passed in the Minnesota state legislature to help scale up the program across the state. The program was designed and validated by research to give pre-K children living with the stressors of poverty a leg up as they step into kindergarten. Nothing is more satisfying than knowing our youngest and most challenged learners no longer must start kindergarten already behind the learning curve. Musical interventions throughout the school day reinforce behaviors essential for self-regulation, a foundational skill for the learning process.

Our Global Music Initiative Artist-in-Residence program hosted 11 racially diverse teaching and performing artists who engaged K-12 students and community members with meaningful experiences with music outside the classical canon. We were pleased and proud to complete another season of our Madeline Island Chamber Music program, based in Madeline Island, WI, with record applications and incredibly qualified applicants.

The culmination of the 2023 fiscal year for MacPhail represents more than just achievements and milestones; it demonstrates our teaching artists’ unwavering dedication, our programs’ resilience, and the profound impact made across communities. As we celebrate record-breaking success, legislative recognition, and the completion of the Up Tempo! campaign, we look forward, knowing that our commitment to accessibility, innovation and excellence in music education will only continue to expand MacPhail’s impact in the years to come.

SPECIAL NOTE FROM KYLE: Thank you all for your support for MacPhail, and for me, over these past 13 years as CEO, as I move towards retirement in August. It has been the honor of my life and the high point of my 48-year working career to have been entrusted to lead this organization and become a colleague of our wonderful faculty and staff. Perhaps most satisfying were the students I have come to know and their unique and treasured stories about music and MacPhail in their lives.

Harnessing the Power of Exceptional Teaching at Madeline Island Chamber Music

Reflecting on the past fiscal year, we celebrate the remarkable journey of MacPhail’s programming at Madeline Island Chamber Music (MICM) in picturesque La Pointe, Wisconsin. Since MacPhail joined forces with MICM in 2020, the program has thrived, staying true to its core mission of providing top-notch chamber music training and performances for talented young musicians. MacPhail has also expanded its use of the Madeline Island campus to include exciting initiatives like MacPhail on Madeline Island: Kidsfest, a day of music for families, a MacPhail Music for Life™ Musical Theater Retreat for 55+, and an excursion for high schoolers in MacPhail’s Northside Youth Orchestra.

Madeline Island Chamber Music exemplifies MacPhail’s outstanding faculty and teaching at its finest. One goal of the Up Tempo! campaign is to provide unparalleled and inspiring music learning experiences, and nowhere is that more alive than nestled in the woods of Madeline Island. Students from across the nation and abroad come to the program, forming lifelong friendships that transcend summer study. Last year, MICM received of 317 applications — a 23% increase from the prior year — with applicants from 36 different states and 74 different schools.

Our donors are essential to upholding MICM’s accessibility and standard of excellence. Many of the 73 students who attended in 2023 received partial or total financial aid. Ingrid, a cellist from Owatonna, Minn., is a college junior at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul and received the Vicki and Chip Emery Fellowship to attend Madeline Island last summer. “I learned so much, not only from the incredible faculty but also from my fellow quartet members,” Ingrid says. “In each rehearsal with them I was inspired by their musicianship, and every day I was pushed to become the best musician I could be. The high standards of the faculty encouraged us to strive for excellence in each performance.”

“I learned so much… every day I was pushed to become the best musician I could be.”

Nazeeh Shahid, a violist and high school senior from Chicago, Ill., received a full scholarship to the Chamber Music for Strings program at MICM, sponsored by Connie Pries. “Nazeeh is an exceptional player and ended up making the semi-finals of the Sphinx Competition, a highly competitive strings competition for Black and Latinx musicians, following his participation in the program. We are fortunate to have had a participant in MICM reach this level and recognition,” says Alyssa Saint, Director of Operations at MICM.

As we look back on the year, the expansion of MacPhail’s programming on Madeline Island stands as a testament to your generosity and our shared commitment to excellence and innovation. The increase in applications, concert attendance and offerings demonstrate the growing recognition and impact of MICM’s programs, while the stories of students like Ingrid and Nazeeh highlight the impact financial aid can make on students’ lives. As we continue to nurture the next generation of musical talent, we remain steadfast in our dedication to fostering excellence and a lifelong love of music.

Project Amplify: Culturally Enriching Music Education

Thanks to our generous supporters, MacPhail’s Project Amplify provides programming that nurtures creativity, honors students’ backgrounds, and provides tools and resources to support K-12 education, all at no cost to schools or music educators. This program is rooted in student-centered and culturally sustaining practices and is designed to enhance accessibility and introduce compelling, diverse programs, two essential pillars of our Up Tempo! campaign.

Last fiscal year, Project Amplify commissioned two original pieces by Black composers: one for Ascension Catholic School’s After School Strings program (grades 4-8) and one for the MacPhail Northside Youth Orchestra (MNYO, grades 7-12). Thanks to donor support, both programs are held in North Minneapolis and are offered at no cost to students.

Composer Matteo Williams wrote that his piece composed for Ascension was meant to serve “as a reminder that the limit for success and joy lies beyond the sky, with a suspenseful opening melody that emerges from A minor triumphantly into C major.” After School Strings Program Director James Castañeda felt students were especially driven to master the piece. “They were excited to find out it was a new composition that was made just for them. It sounds like a new piece of music; it’s a little different than what we’ve done,” says Castañeda. “When we were working on the piece, I noticed a lot of attention and focus from the students.”

“The limit for success and joy lies beyond the sky.”

Composer Am’re Ford connected with the MacPhail Northside Youth Orchestra to hear their feelings as part of a collaborative composition process. Chi-Chi Bestmann, Artistic Director and Conductor of MNYO says, “We felt that it would be empowering for the students to have a piece written about their feelings, being residents of Northside in the aftermath of George Floyd. It is always important for the students to have people to look up to, especially a person with a similar background to their own.”

To wrap up the collaboration, MNYO performed the final piece at the Minnesota Music Educators Association’s (MMEA) Midwinter Convention in February 2024. “MNYO being chosen to perform at MMEA was an honor, and an opportunity for MacPhail to showcase the unique opportunities a community orchestra can create for twenty-first century youth,” says Elizabeth Winslow, Director of School Partnerships. “Additionally, the students were able to premiere a piece written specifically for them with the composer in attendance, which is a truly magical experience.”

Project Amplify extends MacPhail’s reach to events like MMEA, reinforcing our commitment to enriching music education and forging partnerships with schools and teachers across greater Minnesota. In 2023, MacPhail proudly sponsored keynote speaker Franklin Willis, an acclaimed music educator from Nashville, Tenn., to present at MMEA. Willis’s sessions offered educators innovative strategies for leveraging culturally diverse music and art to deepen student engagement and increase cultural relevance within the elementary music classroom.

Through Project Amplify, MacPhail’s commitment to enriching music education reaches beyond the classroom, fostering inclusivity, empowerment, and innovation within communities. With critical funding from individual and institutional funders and partners, and exemplified by impactful collaborations like the commissioning of new works and sponsorship of influential educators, we continue to pave the way for an exciting future for young people through the power of music.

Harmonizing Hope: Music Therapy is an Essential Tool for Mental Health

Individuals across Minnesota face health challenges at an alarming rate. A quick look at the data shows:

The concerning trend in overall mental health presents widespread challenges for our communities. Good mental health is more than the absence of illness; it also encompasses having fulfilling relationships, utilizing strengths, contributing to the community, and being resilient.

In fiscal year 2023, thanks to the support of our community, MacPhail’s Music Therapy program served 690 clients. Music is a vital tool for mental health, enabling clients to express themselves, communicate, and experience the world more vibrantly. Our music therapy program at Andrew Residence exemplifies the profound impact of musical connection and self-expression. It brings the joy of music to those who may not otherwise have had access — a central pillar of our Up Tempo! campaign.

Since 2015, MacPhail has provided music therapy to individuals living at Andrew Residence, a licensed 212-bed residential facility offering comprehensive long-term care, treatment, and rehabilitation services for adults experiencing mental illness. Offerings include individual music therapy, ukulele group, Voices Heard Choir, Music-n-Art, and Musically Mindful Mornings, among others. MacPhail therapists also offer adaptive music lessons for interested residents, whether or not they have studied music in the past. All ability levels are supported in making music for enjoyment, health, and well-being.

“I wait all week for this, and some days I don’t have the energy to come, but I always feel so much better afterward.”

Last year, more than 80 residents at Andrew Residence participated directly in music therapy, and 170+ residents reported having positive interactions with musical offerings, such as engaging in live environmental music therapy during mealtimes a few times each month.

Moments demonstrating the power of music happen daily at Andrew, says Melissa Wenszell, Senior Music Therapist and Clinical Supervisor at MacPhail. One night in the Voices Heard Choir, there were fewer attendees than usual, and it seemed things might wrap up early. However, residents asked if there was time to sing another round. One confided to Wenszell, “I wait all week for this, and some days I don’t have the energy to come, but I always feel so much better afterward. It stays with you: I sleep better that night and wake up in a better mood. And really, all we’re doing is singing.” The extra singing round was memorable for Wenszell: “When you have nine people singing ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ at the top of their lungs, it doesn’t get better than that.”

Last year, 59 residents took advantage of 1-1 sessions. Wenszell notices people’s progress when they have music to look forward to. After a hefty session, one client told her, “When I come here, I don’t just get to make music; I get to make peace with myself.” These inspiring stories of resilience and healing remind us that music has the remarkable ability to uplift spirits and forge bonds and show just how essential it is to make the power of music available to all. Thank you for supporting this essential work!

William S. MacPhail Society

The William S. MacPhail Society honors and celebrates donors who have generously included the MacPhail Center for Music in their estate plans. We deeply appreciate the thoughtful generosity of these donors.

“A city, state or nation cannot live by industry alone. There must be something for the heart and soul.” – William S. MacPhail (1881-1962)

In 1907, William Smith MacPhail, an original member of the Minnesota Symphony (now the Minnesota Orchestra), established the MacPhail School of Violin in Minneapolis. His legacy of excellence, leadership and musicianship continues more than 100 years later at MacPhail Center for Music.

Named Funds and Scholarship Gifts

MacPhail recognizes the importance of removing financial barriers to support, inspire, and empower students. Scholarships play a pivotal role in providing a substantial boost to students’ musical journeys.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, MacPhail awards over 50 scholarships each year. These scholarships, available across all instruments and areas of instruction, encompass both need-based and merit-based support.

Creating and naming scholarships and funds offers donors a meaningful opportunity to honor loved ones, friends, and mentors while providing essential support to MacPhail. These contributions are instrumental in ensuring that every student can access the transformative power of music education.
